The Kabale District LC5 Chairman, Nelson Nshangabasheija, has called on residents to embrace peaceful democracy ahead of the local government council elections scheduled for Thursday.
Nshangabasheija, who is seeking a second term and is running on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) ticket, is facing competition from Denis Ndyomugyenyi Nzeirwe, the former Deputy Resident District Commissioner of Kyankwanzi, and Counsel Wilbroad Atwebembeire Rwamunahe, the legal advisor of PEAS Traders in Uganda.
Speaking to our reporter on Tuesday, Nshangabasheija emphasized that peaceful democracy entails obtaining and exercising political power through free and fair elections, while upholding the rule of law, human rights and fundamental freedoms.
He highlighted the importance of strong democratic institutions, active civic engagement, and a culture of dialogue and compromise to peacefully resolve conflicts.
He also urged voters to make informed choices by researching candidates thoroughly and considering the broader well-being of the district.
Nshangabasheija encouraged the electorate to set aside political differences and work together for the progress of Kabale.
