Aspirants vying for National Resistance Movement (NRM) parliamentary seats in Kabale District have unanimously agreed to suspend joint campaign activities, citing the absence of logistical support from the party’s district office.
The resolution was reached on Tuesday during a joint security and coordination meeting held in the Kabale District Boardroom, chaired by Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Christopher Aine. The meeting brought together the majority of NRM flag bearers contesting for various parliamentary positions in the district.
Tensions rose after the NRM District Registrar, Barbra Ainebyoona, informed the aspirants that her office had not yet received logistical support from the party’s national secretariat. She noted that essential campaign materials, including public address systems and pre-arranged venues, were unavailable.
The announcement sparked concern among candidates, who questioned the feasibility of running coordinated campaigns under such circumstances. Among those expressing frustration were Counsel Eliab Naturinda Mporeera (Ndorwa West), Andrew Baryayanga Ajja, Sheikh Kassim Kamugisha, and Michael Turyamureeba Byamungu (Kabale Municipality), and Elvis Twenda (Ndorwa East).
They argued that without proper facilitation, joint campaigns would be disorganized and ineffective.
Kabale District Woman MP Catherine Atwakiire Ndamira, who is seeking re-election, said she was open to joint campaigns but emphasized the importance of consensus among candidates.
“I am ready for joint efforts, but I will go with whatever the team agrees on,” she stated.
Following lengthy deliberations, the meeting resolved to suspend joint campaign activities until the district registrar receives clear directives and logistical support from the NRM national secretariat.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Deputy RDC Christopher Aine revealed that all candidates had been directed to submit their individual campaign schedules to the office of the NRM District Registrar. He said the move aims to harmonize programs and prevent clashes over venues.
