Residents in Kasese Municipality have petitioned the Regional Police Commander for Rwenzori East, SSP Denis Odoch, over what they describe as an increasing number of street children threatening safety and security in Kasese Town.
In a letter dated September 4, 2026, and received by the RPC’s office on September 7, residents led by Mugisha Selevest Kighina, a resident of Nyakasanga West Cell in Nyamwamba Division, said Kasese Town is developing rapidly, but the growing number of street children scattered across the town has become a major challenge.
Mugisha said some of the street children allegedly move around with knives, pangas and other weapons, which they reportedly use to attack both young and elderly people.
He further alleged that the children rob residents of their property and accused law enforcement officers of failing to take action, even when some of the incidents allegedly occur in their presence.
Mugisha said the situation has left residents living in fear and instability, while contributing to increasing poverty in the community.
He appealed to police to treat the growing number of street children as a serious security concern and take immediate action to address the problem and find a lasting solution.
