LAKE VICTORIA: Boat Capsizes, 20 Confirmed Dead, 9 Rescued

KAMPALA – Tragedy struck Lake Victoria today in the early hours of the morning at 5:00 AM, when a boat carrying 34 people capsized. As a result, at least 20 people have lost their lives, while 9 others have been successfully rescued.

SSP Patrick Onyango, the spokesperson for the Kampala Metropolitan police, reported that the boat was laden with bags of charcoal, fresh foods, and silver fish, among other items. The cause of the accident was attributed to both overloading and adverse weather conditions.

In response to the incident, rescue efforts are underway, with teams from the Police Marines, UPDF Fisheries Protection Unit, and the local community combing the waters in search of the missing individuals.

SSP Patrick Onyango issued an important appeal to the public, urging them to always wear life jackets and avoid overloading their vessels to prevent such tragedies in the future. Let us keep the victims and their families in our thoughts during this difficult time.
