The Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC/M23) has accused government-backed coalition forces of deliberately destroying key public infrastructure in North Kivu, alleging continued violations of ceasefire agreements.
In a statement issued by the group’s head of communication, Lawrence Kanyuka, AFC/M23 claimed that forces aligned with the Kinshasa government, including FARDC, FOLC, Mai-Mai Wazalendo, foreign mercenaries, and Burundi’s National Defence Force (FDNB), destroyed a bridge in Mpeti, Walikale Territory, on Sunday.
According to the group, the incident has cut off riverbank communities from essential services and disrupted the movement of people and goods.
The M23 described the destruction as “a premeditated act of sabotage” that constitutes “a crime against humanity” aimed at suffocating civilians.
The group further alleged that such operations are being coordinated from what it referred to as “a command centre of terror” in Uvira.
While reaffirming its commitment to protecting civilians, AFC/M23 said it would “neutralise any negative forces” posing a threat to the population.
There has been no immediate response from government authorities in Kinshasa regarding the allegations.
