The March 23 Movement (M23) rebels have announced the official opening of the 2025–2026 school year in territories under their control in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Lawrence Kanyuka, the group’s head of communication, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Sunday evening. He said classes in the “liberated areas” would resume on Monday, September 1, 2025.

Kanyuka urged parents and guardians to prepare their children for school and ensure punctual attendance at the start of the new academic term.

M23, an armed rebel group that has waged intermittent insurgencies in eastern DRC, currently controls several areas in North Kivu Province following intensified clashes with government forces.
