Police in Mbarara City have arrested a man accused of attempting to murder his wife by cutting her with a panga during a domestic dispute.
The suspect, identified as Nuwagaba Alex, is accused of attacking his 53-year-old wife, Nuwagaba Rossette, a businesswoman and resident of Rwemirinzi Cell in Nyamitanga Division, Mbarara City.
According to police, the incident occurred on Tuesday after Rossette returned from her village and allegedly found her husband in their rented house with another woman.
Rwizi Region Police spokesperson Samson Kasasira said the discovery angered Rossette, prompting her to order her husband to leave the house, which she rents.
“During the process of chasing the man, she realised that her television set was missing from the house. She then grabbed her husband’s bag,” Kasasira said in a statement issued on Wednesday.
Police allege that Nuwagaba then picked up a panga and cut his wife on the head and hand.
Rossette was rushed to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital for treatment.
Nuwagaba is in police custody pending a mental health assessment as investigations continue.
Police said inquiries into the attempted murder case are ongoing.
