The Ministry of Local Government (MoLG) on Tuesday convened a high-level consultative meeting at its headquarters to deliberate on the proposed creation of three new districts and one city out of Tororo District.

The meeting, chaired by the Minister for Local Government, Hon. Raphael Magyezi, brought together Members of Parliament from Tororo, the District Chairperson, District Speaker, Resident District Commissioner, and LCIII chairpersons of sub-counties and town councils.

The proposal, guided by directives from H.E. the President and Cabinet, seeks to create Mukuju, Mulanda, and Kisoko districts, while elevating Tororo Municipality to city status.

‎According to Hon. Magyezi, the move is intended to resolve long-standing socio-political tensions between the Iteso and Japadhola communities, which have affected governance and service delivery in the district.

‎He noted that both political and cultural leaders have now reached consensus on the split, which is expected to foster harmony and spur sustainable development.

“Tororo City will serve as a unifying symbol for both communities, retaining the name ‘Tororo’ as a shared identity,” Magyezi explained.

As the meeting concluded, the Minister urged leaders to widely consult their constituents before a final decision is made, noting that a follow-up meeting will be held in Tororo on Friday.

“Let’s subject this to the community before we take the final decision. You are leaders of the people and increasingly respected, but why not listen to the people? Chairpersons LC1, LC2, and councilors at the 11 sub-counties that constitute this area must be part of this process,” he emphasized.
