The Member of Parliament representing people with disabilities (PWDs) in Uganda, Robert Ssewagudde, has asked the government to ensure that people with disabilities are given equal consideration in government programmes, employment and recruitment.

Ssewagudde made the call on Monday while officiating as chief guest at the opening of the 15th International Conference of the Deaf (ICD) Annual International Deaf Youth and Family Conference at Seseme Girls Secondary School in Kisoro District.

The conference has attracted deaf participants from Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and will run until September 5.
The conference is organised by Immanuel Church of the Deaf in Kampala in partnership with Muhabura Diocese. This year’s conference is being held under the theme: “Here am I. Send me,” drawn from Isaiah 6:8.

Ssewagudde said people with disabilities should not be discriminated against in employment and other opportunities because many are educated and capable of performing the same duties as their non-disabled counterparts.

“People with disabilities are also educated like other people and should be given equal opportunities in employment and government programmes,” he said.

He said he would continue advocating for the rights and welfare of people with disabilities, including persons with albinism, who he said require support to access basic necessities and protective items.
