A delegation from Uganda’s ruling party, the National Resistance Movement (NRM), led by Secretary General Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong, has reached a mutual agreement with their Kenyan counterparts from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to deepen political cooperation, uphold the rule of law, and jointly reject all forms of extremism.
The announcement was made during a press conference in Nairobi on Saturday, following a three-day official visit by Todwong and his delegation, which included Maj. (Rtd) Awich Pollar, NRM’s Director for External Affairs, and Col. Okei Rukogota, Director of the National Leadership Institute (NALI) in Kyankwanzi.
The NRM team was hosted by UDA leaders, headed by Secretary General Sen. Hassan Omar.
This visit follows an earlier reciprocal trip by a Kenyan delegation to NALI in Kyankwanzi, where they expressed interest in enrolling members for cadre development programs.
Todwong thanked the UDA leadership for their hospitality and conveyed greetings from President Yoweri Museveni. He described the bilateral discussions as productive and beneficial for both countries.
“We emphasized strengthening cooperation across party, people, and government levels,” Todwong stated. “As you know, Kenya is the umbilical cord of our economy. Whatever happens there affects Uganda directly. Therefore, it is in our interest to deepen the fraternal relationship between our peoples and leaders.”
He expressed optimism about future engagements, noting that the NRM looks forward to hosting a UDA delegation in Uganda for more comprehensive discussions.
Sen. Hassan Omar echoed the importance of the partnership, noting that both parties had agreed to enhance collaboration on legislative and policy matters, effective governance, and accelerated implementation of development programs.
On social harmony, the two sides committed to promoting national unity, tolerance, and civil rights, while firmly rejecting division and extremism.
“As ruling parties, we are committed to good governance, strengthening transparency, accountability, and the rule of law essential pillars for restoring public trust in our institutions,” Sen. Hassan said.
He added that the parties also resolved to pursue a unified approach to foreign policy, safeguarding national interests while advancing international cooperation.
“We have agreed to work together for the peace, stability, and sustainable development of our nations,” Sen. Hassan concluded, adding that regular consultations would be held to monitor progress and deepen the partnership.
