The NRM Electoral Commission has declared Ann Ruyondo Lumumba the party’s flag bearer for the position of chairperson of the National Women’s Council.
Ruyondo Lumumba secured 109 votes to defeat incumbent Farida Kibowa, who polled 25 votes, in the party’s internal elections.
In the other positions, Agnes Kirabo was elected vice chairperson after securing 81 votes. She defeated Janipher Kengaju Akiiki and Sheebah Nagudi Muloni, who polled 32 and three votes respectively.
Hope Nakunda and Among Shakila Mwenyi were elected NRM flag bearers for secretary for finance and secretary for publicity respectively.
NRM Electoral Commission chairperson Tanga Odoi, who presided over the elections, commended the voters for maintaining discipline throughout the exercise.
“I am happy that we have at last chosen leaders of your choice who will represent the NRM in the Friday national elections,” Dr Odoi said.
He said the NRM would fully support its flag bearers in the national elections to ensure they defeat opposition and independent candidates.
“The NRM party will, with its full force, back our ticket holders at the national level to ensure we defeat the opposition candidates and the independents,” he said.
NRM Women’s League chairperson Adrine Kobusigye congratulated the newly elected team and pledged to support them in the forthcoming national elections.
Kobusigye urged all contestants to respect the outcome of the internal elections and work together to mobilise support for the party candidates.
“I hope everyone is satisfied with the process and therefore nobody will come out to contest as independent or even sponsor one. Let us remain united and mobilise to pull off the final win on Friday,” she said.
She warned that it would be disappointing for candidates who participated in the party’s electoral process to later seek election as independents.
