KAMPALA – Uganda Police is currently Preparing for the alleged upcoming Protest events, including the “Go-Kungu” Mass demonstration scheduled for January 15, 2024, organized by the National Unity Platform Party.
SCP Fred Enanga, the Police spokesperson, revealed that they have developed a comprehensive strategy involving counter-response, reactions, and arrests to address these protests and demonstrations.
Their aim is to ensure that those planning to use violence and intimidation face the consequences of their actions.
Enanga emphasized that the police will not rest until those responsible for inciting violence and lawlessness are brought to justice.
He also disclosed that despite claims by the National Unity Platform Party that their mobilization tours were peaceful in the initial phase, the police had credible intelligence suggesting their intent to confront law enforcement and create chaotic situations.
He cited the Party’s unregulated processions as a significant risk to the public, including motorists, pedestrians, bystanders, and participants.
In the first phase of the Party’s mobilization tour, the police and sister security agencies exercised restraint to avoid unnecessary confrontations, which could be exploited for negative publicity and propaganda against the police and the nation.
Enanga noted that previous demonstrations by the National Unity Platform Party had resulted in loss of life, criminal charges including arson, malicious damage, attempted murder, incitement of violence, damage to roads, assault, obstruction of officers on duty, and various traffic offenses, displaying a disregard for the communities affected.
Enanga reminded the public that the police are obligated by the Police Act, Section 32(1), to manage public meetings proportionately.
He emphasized their commitment to providing a safe and secure environment for Ugandans and visitors alike.
He called on all Ugandans and visitors to stand in solidarity with the rule of law and reject unlawful demonstrations, violent actions, and destructive behaviors associated with the National Unity Platform Party.
