A fatal road crash occurred at around 4:00 AM on Saturday morning at Kasanvu, along the Mutukula–Kyotera road, involving a police Land Cruiser (UP 2914 T) and a Mercedes-Benz trailer (T824 DXF/T529 EFJ).
According to preliminary reports, the crash happened when the police vehicle, which had been parked next to a checkpoint with officers on board, was hit by a speeding trailer traveling in the same direction. The trailer lost control, rammed into the stationary police vehicle, and overturned on top of it.
As a result, the driver of the police vehicle died instantly, while three other police officers sustained injuries and were rushed for medical treatment.
Investigations have revealed that the trailer was being driven by the turn-man, while the main driver was reportedly resting at the time of the incident.
The turn-man has since been apprehended, and efforts are underway to arrest the main driver, who is currently on the run.
SP Michael Kananura, the Public Relations Officer in the Directorate of traffic and road safety urged all road users, particularly truck drivers, to strictly observe traffic regulations, especially:
Adhering to speed limits at all times.
Exercising extra caution during night hours when visibility is reduced.
Ending the risky practice of allowing untrained turn-men to operate heavy trucks, which endangers lives.
Authorities have extended condolences to the family of the deceased officer and wished the injured officers a quick recovery.
