President Yoweri Museveni has called on National Resistance Movement (NRM) delegates to take the frontline in the fight against corruption and ensure that government services reach ordinary citizens.

Speaking at Kololo Independence Grounds on Monday during a meeting with the NRM Special Interest Groups (SIGs), the President outlined Uganda’s economic transformation, noting its growth from $3.9 billion in 1986 to the current $66 billion.

He said the country is targeting a high middle-income status with a projected economy of $500 billion.

Museveni explained that Uganda’s economic journey has passed through five phases: minimum recovery, expansion of production, diversification, value addition, and the current “knowledge economy.”

He cited innovations such as the Kira electric buses, vaccine development, and computer manufacturing as proof of progress.

The President urged all Ugandans to join the money economy, emphasizing the importance of households producing for both food and income.

“In 2013, 68% of homesteads were outside the money economy. Today, 67% are in, but 33% remain out. Every family must produce for both food and cash,” Museveni said.

On governance, he tasked NRM delegates to ensure corruption is rooted out, particularly at the local government level. He warned against bribery in recruitment processes and misuse of public funds.

“Don’t allow corrupt people to undermine your progress. Stop those who steal public funds or take bribes,” he cautioned.

The President also urged leaders to ensure proper maintenance of roads, monitor police performance in fighting crime, and safeguard free education in government schools.

He expressed concern that despite government funding, some schools continue to charge illegal fees. On healthcare, he condemned the theft of medicines from hospitals and called on communities to expose culprits.

He underscored safe water, quality education, and reliable healthcare as pillars of improved welfare and prosperity.

“Let us fight poverty, corruption, and crime, while embracing education, healthcare, and clean water as our pathway to a better future,” Museveni said.

NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong echoed the President’s message, urging members to put the party’s mission above personal interests.

“We are members of one family. Focus on the bigger picture, the mission, objectives, and goals of the party, rather than personal ambitions,” Todwong told delegates.
