Prominent Ugandan businessman and philanthropist James Musinguzi Garuga has reportedly passed away.
Sources close to the family confirmed that Garuga died at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala. However, the cause of death and further details have not yet been officially confirmed.
Garuga, one of the most influential figures from the Kigezi sub-region, rose to national prominence in the early 2000s as a major political financier and founding supporter of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).
He was a close ally of Dr. Kizza Besigye during the Reform Agenda era, providing vital logistical and financial support to the opposition’s efforts against the ruling NRM government.
In 2006, Garuga stepped back from frontline politics to focus on what he described as “development politics.” He channeled his resources into tea farming, tourism, infrastructure, and education projects in Kanungu District and other parts of western Uganda.
Over the years, Garuga became widely respected across political lines for his philanthropy and investments aimed at improving local livelihoods. His charitable efforts included funding churches, scholarships, and various community development initiatives.
At the time of his reported death, he remained a powerful voice in regional development and a respected elder statesman in Kigezi.
