The Rukungiri District Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Midius Natukunda Kaharata, has rejected the results of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party primaries, citing massive irregularities ahead of the 2026 general elections.

According to results announced by the district returning officer, Natukunda was defeated by former Rubabo County MP, Mary Paula Turyahikayo, who garnered 46,512 votes (52.6%), while Natukunda obtained 34,961 votes (39.5%).

Other contenders in the race included Innocent Kashobera with 3,172 votes (3.6%), Annah Nuwagaba Tumuramye with 2,667 votes (3.0%), Prize Twinomuhangi with 820 votes (0.9%), and Caledonia Bakironda Musimenta with 314 votes (0.4%). A total of 85,274 votes were cast across the district.

Addressing journalists from her office in Kifunjo Cell, Kyatoko Ward, Eastern Division of Rukungiri Municipality on Monday, Natukunda dismissed the outcome, alleging widespread voter irregularities. She claimed that in several areas, the number of voters exceeded the official voter register, and that her supporters were subjected to intimidation and bribery on polling day.

She also accused religious leaders of influencing voters along sectarian lines, particularly targeting Catholic congregations to rally behind a specific candidate, which she said severely undermined her chances of re-election.
