The Deputy Speaker of Kenya’s Parliament, Rt. Hon. Gladys J. Boss, has praised leaders in Kasese District for their strong lobbying efforts that have spurred infrastructure development and boosted tourism in the region.
Speaking after completing the 5km run at the Mt. Rwenzori Tusker Lite Marathon in Kasese town, which attracted over 6,000 runners from 35 countries, Hon. Gladys said improved facilities are key to positioning the marathon on the global stage.
“Once the hotels are welcoming and the roads are favorable for participants, this marathon will continue to grow and attract even more countries,” she noted.
She pledged Kenya’s support in promoting tourism and pledged continued Kenyan participation in the Rwenzori event. She also invited athletes to take part in the annual Uasin Gishu County Marathon held every April in Kenya.
Organisers hailed this year’s marathon as the biggest yet. Amos Wekesa, CEO of Great Lakes Safaris, highlighted the surge in participation compared to previous editions.
The competition produced thrilling victories:
- 42km Men’s Marathon – Bernard Cheptoch (UGX 10m prize)
- 42km Women’s Marathon – Rachael Zena Chebeti (UGX 10m prize)
- 21km Men’s Half Marathon – Abel Chebet (UGX 7m prize, third consecutive title)
- 21km Women’s Half Marathon – Kevin Cherop
The marathon continues to cement Kasese’s place as a hub for sports tourism in Uganda, drawing elite athletes and adventure seekers from across the world.
