The Minister of Security, Maj. Gen. (Rtd.) Jim Muhwezi, has lost his seat as Chairperson of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Veterans League to Lt. (Rtd.) Moses Mushabe, the NRM chairman of Isingiro District.
In a hotly contested election within the NRM internal structures, Mushabe secured 532 votes against Gen. Muhwezi’s 222, ending Muhwezi’s long tenure at the helm of the Veterans League.
Mushabe’s victory is being viewed as both a generational shift and a vote of confidence in his pledge to prioritize the welfare of war veterans.
He has promised to address long-standing concerns about healthcare, livelihoods, and overall living conditions for ex-servicemen, issues he says have been neglected for years.
“This is not just about leadership change but about delivering on broken promises. Our veterans deserve better, and I am committed to fighting for their dignity and welfare,” Mushabe declared after his victory.
The Isingiro NRM boss is no stranger to commanding strong grassroots support, he previously won his district chairmanship with an overwhelming 89% margin.
His rise to the national veterans’ leadership underscores his growing influence within the ruling party.
Maj. Gen. Muhwezi, who has historically held the position, now exits the Veterans League leadership as Mushabe assumes the role, marking a symbolic baton handover to a younger, more locally grounded leader.
