Seven civilians were executed on Sunday in Shanji, Kalehe Territory, South Kivu, following indiscriminate drone bombings by the Kinshasa coalition in the highlands of Minembwe, M23 rebels reported.
Lawrence Kanyuka, head of communications for M23, said in a statement on Monday that the attacks targeted densely populated areas of Mikenke and Gakenke between 8:45 p.m. on Sunday and 7:00 a.m. Monday, leaving over 20 people injured.
The executed victims have been identified as Shadai Ndagije, Bisengi Mpenze, Étienne Gitinywa, Gashimye Hitimana, Daniel Hategeka, Ndayambaje Muhire, and Iradukunda Nzanzumuhire.
“These attacks are serious violations of international humanitarian law, reflecting a continued campaign of terror against civilian populations,” Kanyuka said.
He added that the Kinshasa coalition has repeatedly allied with elements of the FDLR and deployed them across conflict zones, undermining previous commitments to peace and stability.
