Efforts to safeguard public funds and restore integrity in government programs have received a boost after anti-corruption agencies arraigned a Community Development Officer in Soroti City over alleged extortion of beneficiaries under the Parish Development Model (PDM).
Alajo Hellen, the Community Development Officer for Kengere Ward in Soroti City’s East Division, was presented before the Soroti Chief Magistrate’s Court on charges of obtaining money by false pretence.
The case follows joint investigations by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).
According to investigators, the accused allegedly solicited money from more than 121 PDM beneficiaries, claiming it was needed for group registration, renewal of certificates, and stationery.
It is further alleged that after beneficiaries received their Shs 1,000,000 funding, they were asked to pay between Shs 10,000 and Shs 50,000 each under the guise of facilitating trainers and securing future funding, claims later found to be false.
The swift action by authorities underscores growing commitment to ensuring that government initiatives like the PDM directly benefit intended communities without exploitation.
Officials have reiterated their stance against corruption, warning that anyone found abusing public office will be held accountable.
Alajo Hellen has been remanded until April 27, 2026, as investigations and legal proceedings continue.
