Uganda and Belgium have signed a Cooperation Framework aimed at promoting inclusion and non-discrimination in interventions financed by the European country.
The framework was signed on Tuesday by Finance Minister Henry Musasizi and the Belgian Agency for International Cooperation (Enabel) Country Director, Nicolas Oebel, at a ceremony witnessed by Belgium’s Ambassador to Uganda, Hugues Chantry.
The initiative seeks to strengthen the protection and promotion of human rights in regions covered by the Uganda-Belgium Country Programme. The interventions will be supported by a €299,616 (Shs) grant.
Minister Musasizi commended Belgium for its continued support towards Uganda’s development priorities, citing the ongoing five-year Uganda-Belgium Country Programme, which is backed by a €68 million grant.
He called for strong coordination, accountability and collaboration among stakeholders to ensure effective implementation of the framework.
Ambassador Chantry reaffirmed Belgium’s commitment to promoting human rights and strengthening bilateral cooperation with Uganda.
Uganda Human Rights Commission acting secretary Kamadi Byonabye welcomed the support and pledged the commission’s commitment to implementing the framework in accordance with Ugandan laws.
