KABALE: Police in Kabale District are searching for an unknown suspect(s) who allegedly stole a gun from a security guard at Pearl Hotel in Kigongi Cell, Central Ward, Central Division of Kabale Municipality.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday at around 4:20 a.m. The stolen firearm, an SAR rifle numbered 564210028-15120 with two rounds of ammunition, belonged to 23-year-old Osbert Byonanebye, a security guard attached to Ruhama Veterans Security Services.
According to police reports, the guard was allegedly found asleep while on duty, which allowed the suspect to seize the weapon and flee. The thief reportedly escaped in the direction of Rushaki, in Kyanamira Sub-county. Although Byonanebye attempted to pursue the suspect, he was unsuccessful.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, confirmed the incident and said a case of firearm theft has been registered at Kabale Central Police Station. Investigations are underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the theft.
Maate urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals or items that may be linked to the incident to the nearest security authorities.
