The State Minister of Finance (General Duties), Hon. Henry Musasizi, has praised the growing cooperation between the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) and the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), describing it as a reflection of the deep historical, cultural, and strategic ties shared by the two neighbouring countries.

Musasizi made the remarks on Saturday at Kabale Main Stadium, where he officiated as Guest of Honour at the 3rd UPDF–RDF Proximity Football Match, an event aimed at promoting defence diplomacy between the two armies.

The match is part of the activities leading up to the 45th Tarehe Sita celebrations slated for February 6, 2026, at the UNITE Grounds (formerly NTC Grounds) in Kabale Municipality.

Minister Musasizi noted that Uganda and Rwanda share more than geographical boundaries, highlighting strong cultural bonds and shared security interests. He applauded the forces for extending their cooperation to sports, calling it a powerful symbol of regional harmony.

“This joint engagement in sports is an amazing display of the strong working relationship between the UPDF and the Rwanda Defence Force. The initiators of this idea deserve commendation,” he said. “I believe this collaborative spirit should extend to other development sectors to reinforce lasting peace and prosperity.”

He urged that the goodwill between Uganda and Rwanda be deepened beyond the defence sector to civil service, social cohesion, and even intermarriage, saying such ties help build long-term stability.

He also commended the UPDF for its continued efforts in safeguarding Uganda’s borders and contributing to peace across the East African region.

UPDF 2 Infantry Division Commander, Brig. Gen. Paul Muhanguzi, reiterated that the match is more than recreation, emphasizing that it strengthens mutual trust between the two forces.

He said sports instill discipline, teamwork, and professionalism—values essential for sustaining peace within and across borders.

“Our primary duty as sister nations is to safeguard peace. Sports teaches teamwork and unity, strengthening the already growing cooperation between UPDF and RDF,” Brig. Gen. Muhanguzi noted.

RDF representative and APR FC Chairman, Brig. Gen. Deo Rusangwanwa, thanked the UPDF for the warm hospitality shown to the Rwandan delegation and reaffirmed Rwanda’s commitment to continued partnership.

The match concluded with the UPDF 2 Infantry Division defeating their RDF counterparts 5–2.
