The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) have repelled an armed attack on fishermen at Rweshama Landing Site on Lake Edward in Rukungiri District, recovering several weapons and a canoe used by the assailants.

According to Major Kiconco Tabaro, the UPDF 2nd Infantry Division Public Information Officer, the incident occurred on October 1, 2025, when a UPDF response team was deployed following reports of armed men robbing fishermen on the lake. Upon arrival, the soldiers came under heavy gunfire from the attackers, who were aboard a canoe.

The army responded with fire, forcing the assailants to flee. A search operation later led to the recovery of a canoe containing two light machine guns, five sub-machine guns, and a 25-horsepower engine. No suspects were arrested, and the UPDF suspects that some of the attackers may have drowned in the lake.
