In a photograph frozen in time, dated 2010, a youthful Eliab Mporera Naturinda, barely 22, stands humbly before the late Gen. Aronda Nyakairima, then Chief of Defence Forces. The elder statesman leans in, not merely to speak, but to transfer something deeper: ideology, discipline, vision.

That moment, captured in the golden age of the NRM, tells a story far greater than an image. It tells of a young man’s journey through the careful hands of Uganda’s finest patriots, and how those hands forged a leader now trusted to carry Ndorwa West into the future.

Today, at just 37, Counsel Eliab Mporera is the NRM Party flag bearer for Ndorwa County West, having emerged victorious in a fiercely contested primary that saw him unseat a towering figure, Minister of State for Trade and long-serving MP, Hon. David Bahati.

Yet, for those who know his story, this victory did not begin in 2024. It began much earlier, in quiet mentorships, patient grooming, and ideological deepening, often away from the cameras but never far from greatness.

Naturinda was one of the few young leaders Gen. Aronda kept close, ensuring he understood not just the slogans of the Movement, but its soul: Patriotism. Pan-Africanism. Democracy. Socio-Economic Transformation.

The finest leaders do not simply appear on the stage of history by luck or loud applause. They are patiently carved over many years by elders, those who know that raw power, when not anchored in purpose, can become a threat to the very nation it seeks to serve.

In every serious republic, the responsibility of leadership is not handed to the loudest voice or the most visible face, but to hands that have been prepared in silence, tested in loyalty, trained in principle, and tempered by time.

National stewardship is only passed to those who are not just capable, but deeply trustworthy; not merely popular, but grounded in values that do not shake with the winds of politics. It is through this careful transfer from statesmen to students, that enduring leadership is born.

Eliab Mporera’s rise is not sudden, it is the fruit of a journey begun long ago. In 2010, under the eye of Gen. Aronda Nyakairima, he began absorbing the weight of national responsibility.

Another key figure in his rise was Rt. Hon. Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, a former Prime Minister and elder statesman of the NRM and the son of Kigezi.

Rugunda, known for his calm wisdom and diplomatic acumen, quietly opened doors and offered guidance.

When elders who carry decades of clean, credible, and selfless leadership choose to lay their hands upon a young soul, not in pomp, but in private, something sacred happens. It is not simply advice that is transferred, but the moral weight of a legacy.

It is discipline, patience, history, and national duty being quietly impressed upon the next custodian of the republic.

When such men, like Rt Hon Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, whose career has been marked by restraint, dignity, and unshaken patriotism, choose to mould you, it is no accident when you rise not only to contest, but to lead. This is not luck. This is legacy in motion.

This network of mentorship was not an accident. Mporera was deliberately made by the NRM ideological machines, polished through patience, humility, and service.

Unlike many who burst onto the political scene by force or noise, Mporera rose through safe hands, tested, sharpened, and trusted. His mentors taught him that loyalty is not blind allegiance, but a discipline anchored in values.

Mporera’s ascension is proof that the NRM still produces leaders not by chance, but by cultivation. He is a refined product of Uganda’s ideological elders, blessed by the hands of men who helped shape our country.

And in those hands, Aronda’s firmness, Rugunda’s wisdom, and the NRM’s timeless principles, a new leader was born.
