OP-ED: On September 28th, World Safe Abortion Day is observed globally to advocate for safe and legal access to abortion services. This year, in Uganda, COHERINET (Community Health and Rights Network) led initiatives to promote awareness and education surrounding safe abortion practices.
As the country grapples with high rates of unsafe abortions and related health complications, the day serves as a pivotal moment to discuss the importance of legalizing safe abortion and dispelling common myths.
The State of Abortion in Uganda
According to the Uganda Demographic and Health Survey, an estimated 300,000 abortions occur annually in the country. However, the majority of these procedures are performed under unsafe conditions, leading to serious health risks and even maternal mortality.
A study published in The Lancet highlighted that unsafe abortions contribute to approximately 13% of maternal deaths in Uganda. The urgency for safe and legal abortion access is evident in these statistics, pointing to a pressing public health crisis and why it should be legalised.
Why Safe Abortion Should Be Legalized
- Protecting Women’s Health: Legalizing safe abortion services can significantly reduce maternal mortality rates. Access to trained healthcare providers ensures that women receive care in hygienic environments, decreasing the likelihood of complications.
- Reducing Stigma and Shame: Currently, many women face stigma when seeking abortions due to societal attitudes and legal restrictions. By legalizing safe abortion, we can foster a culture of understanding and support, allowing women to make informed choices about their reproductive health without fear of judgment.
- Addressing Unsafe Abortions: The reality is that abortions will occur regardless of their legal status. Legalizing safe abortion services can help to ensure that women have access to safe procedures rather than resorting to unsafe methods, thus protecting their health and lives.
- Empowering Women: Legal access to safe abortion is integral to women’s rights and autonomy over their own bodies. It allows women to make choices that are best for their health, circumstances, and futures.
Myths and Misconceptions
Misinformation about abortion is widespread, often preventing constructive dialogue about its legalization and safety. Here are some common myths, along with the facts to dispel them:
- Myth: Abortion is Always Dangerous
Fact: When performed by qualified healthcare professionals in sterile environments, abortion is one of the safest medical procedures. The risks associated with safe abortion are significantly lower than those associated with carrying a pregnancy to term. - Myth: Legalizing Abortion Leads to Increased Rates
Fact: Countries that have legalized abortion do not see an increase in abortion rates; instead, they often experience a decrease in unsafe procedures and associated health complications. - Myth: Abortion Causes Infertility
Fact: Research indicates that safe, legal abortions do not lead to infertility. Complications can arise from unsafe abortions, but this is not the case for legal procedures conducted by professionals. - Myth: Women Regret Their Abortions
Fact: Studies show that the vast majority of women who have abortions feel that it was the right decision for them, even years later. Emotional responses can vary, but regret is not as common as is often portrayed.
Acting
To promote safe abortion in Uganda, COHERINET and other organizations are taking proactive steps:
- Education and Awareness Campaigns: Providing accurate information about reproductive health and safe abortion options is crucial. Educational programs targeting young people can help dispel myths and create a supportive environment.
- Advocacy for Legal Reform: Engaging with policymakers to advocate for the legalization of safe abortion services is essential. This includes emphasizing the health benefits and the need for comprehensive reproductive health services.
- Community Support Networks: Establishing support systems for women facing unplanned pregnancies can provide the emotional and logistical help they need to make informed choices.
- Training Healthcare Providers: Investing in training for healthcare workers ensures that they can provide safe abortion services and compassionate care, reducing stigma within healthcare settings.
Therefore,
World Safe Abortion Day is not just a day of recognition; it is a rallying call for change in Uganda. By promoting safe and legal access to abortion, we can protect women’s health, empower them to make informed choices, and ultimately reduce the stigma surrounding reproductive health.
