Church of Uganda Responds to Nakanyonyi School Incident, Clarifies Situation

MUKONO – Following recent media reports of suspected poisoning at Nakanyonyi Senior Secondary School, a Church of Uganda founded School in Nagalama, Mukono Diocese, Rev. Dr. Paul Kakooza, Director of Education Services – Church of Uganda, has spoken out to clarify the situation.

 

On Thursday of this week, approximately 150 students at Nakanyonyi Senior Secondary School in Nagalama, Mukono District fell sick and were subsequently evacuated to hospitals due to suspected food poisoning.

 

The authorities also took samples of the food they consumed to the Government Analytical Laboratory in Kampala for testing as part of their ongoing investigations, according to Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson.

 

In response to the situation, Rev. Dr. Paul Kakooza, confirmed that health workers have managed the situation and have ruled out poisoning as the cause of the illness. Instead, they have attributed the problem to a food-borne illness.

 

“As of now, 11 students are receiving treatment at a nearby health center, 6 have been admitted to Mukono Church of Uganda Hospital, and others are being attended to at Nagalama Hospital”.Rev Dr Kakooza said.

 

He added “Thankfully, no fatalities have been reported”.

 

Rev. Dr. Kakooza reassured the public that the school is currently stable and the situation is under control. As a precautionary measure, day scholars have been advised to remain at home until the situation is resolved.

 

The Church of Uganda expressed gratitude to the medical teams and well-wishers who have worked tirelessly to save the lives of the affected students. Rev. Dr. Kakooza urged people of goodwill to pray for the affected students and called upon all head teachers to be extra vigilant, particularly regarding the welfare of both children and staff.

 

The Church of Uganda is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to cooperate with relevant authorities during the ongoing investigations. Their primary focus remains on ensuring the well-being and safety of the students in their care.
