KIGEZI: Religious leaders in the Kigezi Sub-region have urged Christians to use this year’s Christmas and New Year festival season to reflect on Jesus Christ, who is the reason for the season.
In their various Christmas messages, religious leaders from different denominations emphasized that although Christmas involves feasting, it should primarily be a time to remember Jesus.
The Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese, Rt. Rev. Onesimus Asiimwe, in his sermon at Emmanuel Cathedral Kinyasano in Rukungiri Municipality, stated that true peace can only be found in Jesus, the Prince of Peace.
Bishop Asiimwe explained that for one to receive God’s peace, they must accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior. He clarified that peace does not imply the absence of chaos or conflict but entails standing firm and resolving differences through peaceful means, regardless of the storms faced.

The Bishop of the Diocese of Kigezi, Rt. Rev. Gaddie Akanjuna, delivering his sermon at St. Peter’s Cathedral Rugarama in Kabale Municipality, highlighted that Christmas should not be about wearing expensive clothes and indulging in lavish meals. Instead, he urged Christians to embrace Jesus Christ as their King and Savior to guide them in living righteous lives. Bishop Akanjuna called on Christians to avoid sin and change their mindset as they celebrate the season.

The Bishop of Kabale Diocese, Rt. Rev. Callist Rubaramira, in his homily at Our Lady of Good Shepherd – Rushoroza Cathedral in Kabale Municipality, reminded Christians that Christmas is a time to celebrate the fullness of God’s love and everlasting life through His Son, Jesus Christ. He encouraged Christians to renew their faith in God as they celebrate.

At St. Peter’s Cathedral Nyakatare in Kanungu District, the Bishop of the Diocese of Kinkizi, Rt. Rev. Dan Zoreka, elaborated on the birth of Jesus Christ as the cornerstone of mankind’s redemption. He reminded Christians of the love, hope, and peace brought through the Savior.
Drawing from John 3:16, Bishop Zoreka urged the congregation to embrace love, kindness, and compassion, as these virtues glorify God.
He cautioned against excessive drinking, unsafe driving, and immorality, calling on Christians to focus on the joy and hope that Jesus brings.
“For to us, a child is born, a wonderful counselor who solves our problems, the Almighty God who came in human form, the Prince of Peace,” he said.
The Bishop of Lift Up Jesus Global Ministries in Kabale District, Aloysius Kiiza, appealed to Christians to use this Christmas season to pray for peace in the country ahead of the 2026 general elections. He urged President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the Electoral Commission to adequately prepare to ensure peaceful elections.
