- Asiimwe accused the Diocese of Kigezi in Kabale District of holding a secret meeting of 417 priests, allegedly chaired by Rt. Rev. Gaddie Akanjuna, to strategize on supporting political candidates aligned with the Anglican Church in the upcoming 2026 election.
RUBANDA: The Archdeacon of Bubaare Archdeaconry in Rubanda District, Venerable Oscar Mwesigwa, has warned Kabale-based journalists against misusing social media to defame the Anglican Church of Uganda.
His warning follows comments made by Rodgers Asiimwe, popularly known as Obwengura, an employee at one of the Kabale-based radio stations. Asiimwe accused the Diocese of Kigezi in Kabale District of holding a secret meeting of 417 priests, allegedly chaired by Rt. Rev. Gaddie Akanjuna, to strategize on supporting political candidates aligned with the Anglican Church in the upcoming 2026 election.
While presiding over a baptism ceremony for Ethan Mwesigwa, the son of Charlotte Kemigisha, at St. James Bubare Church of Uganda Archdeaconry in Bubare Town Council on Sunday, Venerable Mwesigwa expressed his bewilderment at Asiimwe’s actions against the Anglican Church of Uganda. Venerable Mwesigwa emphasized that whoever Asiimwe represents on social media is damaging their own reputation.
He highlighted that Asiimwe has repeatedly posted negative content on social media and questioned the source of his misinformation about Bishop Akanjuna meeting the so-called 417 priests, a number the diocese doesn’t even have. Mwesigwa added that Asiimwe has not only been attacking Bishop Akanjuna but has now mixed these allegations with politics.

According to an audio recording circulating on social media, Asiimwe claimed that his investigation revealed the meeting took place last Tuesday at 12:00 AM on Rugarama Hill. He said one attendee, who wished to remain anonymous, informed him that the meeting aimed to organize a group of five members at the village level to support Anglican candidates.
“Reports I got from one of the priests who attended the meeting indicated that the meeting was intended to instruct them to spread the gospel about the hopeful Anglican aspirants in the 2026 general election. It is alleged that the meeting was also attended by Canon Enock Kazooba, Venerable Oscar Mwesigwa, and Canon Johnson Baryantuma Munono, the Diocesan head of laity,” Asiimwe stated.
