The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, the Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, has called upon Christians to remain steadfast in faith, urging them not to fear but to trust that God can transform their circumstances.
While preaching at the Anglican Shrine in Namugongo ahead of the Martyrs Day celebrations on Sunday, Archbishop Kaziimba reflected on the suffering and sacrifice of the Uganda Martyrs.
He reminded believers that although their killers thought they had silenced them, their story did not end in death.
“The end of the rope is not the end of hope,” the Archbishop declared. “God is still working. He is our God, the King of Kings and Master of Masters who knows our journey.”
He emphasized that the Christian journey is one of faith, sacrifice, and spiritual growth, calling on believers to be renewed, reconciled and revived.
“Your setback can be a setup for your comeback,” he proclaimed. “God can use even this moment to show His power. What was meant for evil, He can turn into a blessing. Let us throw off every weight and sin that entangles us, and run the race ahead with our eyes fixed on Jesus Christ, the perfector of our faith.”
Quoting Hebrews 12, Archbishop Kaziimba reminded the congregation of the great cloud of witnesses who endured suffering, persecution and attempts to wipe them out.
“But to God be the glory,” he added passionately. “What was meant for evil has today become a testimony. Look at the multitudes gathered here, this is a message: you cannot destroy what God has created. You cannot fight God. No matter how hard you try, your efforts will be in vain.”
He urged Christians to keep their focus on God even amid trials.
“God will never burden us beyond what we can bear. He is the God of today, tomorrow, and forever, the One who knew you before you were born. That is the God we worship.”
Archbishop Kaziimba affirmed that the God of the martyrs is the same God believers serve today.
“The God who did not allow the blood of the martyrs to be forgotten is still with us. Their blood is the seed of faith. What was intended to erase history has instead become a powerful testimony. Today, Uganda is known across the globe because of 45 faithful men who gave their lives for Christ.”
He encouraged Christians to never lose hope, never abandon their faith, and to stand firm in the face of pressure and adversity.
“Your suffering is not the end. The end of the rope is not the end of hope. The martyrs encourage us on this journey a journey of repentance, of faith, of sacrifice. Through it all, you can be revived, renewed, rebuilt, recommitted, and resuscitated.”
In conclusion, Archbishop Kaziimba thanked the Northern Cluster for organizing the Martyrs Day celebrations. He specifically appreciated Rt. Rev. Godfrey Loum, Chairperson of the organizing committee, and Minister of Health Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng for their leadership and dedication to ensuring a successful and well-coordinated event.
