Excitement is building across Kabale District as preparations intensify for the first-ever Kigezi Unity Run, set to take place on May 11th, 2025, at Kabale Main Stadium.
The event, held under the theme “Kigezi Together for a Healthier Tomorrow,” is spearheaded by Kabale District Woman MP hopeful, Hon. Grace Ankunda Bekunda Bwesigye.
The run is expected to attract thousands of participants from the Kigezi sub-region and neighboring areas, with runners competing in 5km, 10km, and 21km categories. In addition to the run, the event will feature a free medical camp, providing essential health services to the community.
Hon. Ankunda revealed that the idea for the Unity Run was inspired by a moment of deep reflection and prayer, seeking a meaningful way to give back to the people of Kigezi.
“I asked God what I could do to bring our people together to cultivate a spirit of brotherhood and sisterhood that can transform our region positively,” she shared.
The Unity Run, she said, is not just a sporting event but a movement to promote unity across gender, age, and religious lines, with the goal of eradicating sectarianism a divisive force she believes is threatening the fabric of the community.
“If our ancestors built Kigezi by working together, what are we doing as the current generation to uphold and grow that legacy?” she questioned. “I chose to carry this vision to reunite Kabale and Kigezi at large so that together, we can chart a better future.”
Hon. Ankunda emphasized that sectarianism undermines the potential of the region and its people. She called on all residents to embrace a collective mindset, urging them to think, act, and reason as one.
“Uganda is constant. Kigezi is constant. But what are we doing to build it as the people of this generation?” she challenged.
She also rallied the youth to reject division and instead focus on building a brighter, united future.
The Kigezi Unity Run will be an annual event, and Hon. Ankunda encourages everyone to participate not just for fitness, but as a statement of solidarity and regional pride.
Registration is absolutely free, but those who wish to support the cause can purchase official running kits at UGX 25,000 each.
