Renowned Ugandan long-distance runner Moses Ndiema Kipsiro, a 5000-metre specialist and bronze medalist at the 2007 World Championships in Athletics, has confirmed he will be the Chief Runner in the first-ever Kigezi Unity Run.
The event is scheduled to take place on May 11th at Kabale Main Stadium in Kabale District.
The Unity Run is organized by Hon. Grace Ankunda Bwesigye Bekunda, a Kabale District Woman MP hopeful, under the theme “Kigezi Together for a Healthier Tomorrow.”
The event is expected to attract thousands of participants from within and beyond the Kigezi sub-region.
Kipsiro, who also represented Uganda in the 2008 Beijing Olympics finishing fourth in the 5000 metres confirmed his physical presence at the event and urged fellow athletes to use the platform to showcase their talent.
According to Ankunda, runners will compete in 5km, 10km, and 21km races. The event will also feature a free medical camp, offering essential health services to the community.
She emphasized that the Unity Run is more than just a sporting event, it is a movement aimed at fostering unity across gender, age, and religious lines.
The goal, she said, is to combat the rising threat of sectarianism that continues to divide the region.
“If our ancestors built Kigezi by working together, what are we doing as the current generation to uphold and grow that legacy?” she asked. “I chose to carry this vision to reunite Kabale and the greater Kigezi area so that together, we can chart a better future.”
She also revealed plans to make the Unity Run an annual event, encouraging everyone to take part not only for physical fitness but as a show of solidarity and regional pride.
