A group of young boys from Ibanda-Kyanya Town Council, Busongora County North, have joined efforts to promote local tourism as a tool for socio-economic transformation in the district.
The boys, Geoffrey Kamalha, Joab Mumbere, Christian Kambale, and Lordrick Mumbere, aged between 9 and 13, are showcasing their talents in art and crafts at the ongoing activities ahead of the 2025 Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon in Kasese town.
They are among several local entrepreneurs exhibiting items in preparation for the marathon scheduled for Saturday, August 23.
In an interview, 12-year-old Christian Kambale, a Primary Four pupil at Pride Rwenzori Nursery and Primary School in Maliba Town Council, said the group is determined to demonstrate how children can contribute to tourism development.
They displayed locally made cars, wooden sculptures, and items crafted from recycled plastic bottles.
Kambale explained that they had priced their toy cars at Shs25,000 each, hoping to earn money to support their education.
Another member, Joab Mbusa, also 12, who studies in Nyakalengijjo, revealed that the group has ventured into small-scale hydropower generation using river streams in their community.
He said some tourists visiting Rwenzori Mountains National Park have become regular clients, impressed by their innovations.
Mbusa appealed to government to invest more in tourism infrastructure in Kasese, noting that improved facilities would attract more visitors and create lasting benefits for local residents.
