RUKUNGIRI: A Section of truck and special car drivers in Rukungiri Municipality are up in arms over the municipal authority’s proposal to relocate them from their current parking spots in Rukungiri town center.
Prosper Tagobya, Deputy Town Clerk of Rukungiri Municipality, revealed that the municipality intends to move all trucks and special cars to a new area in Kakaba B cell, Eastern division along the Rukungiri – Kanungu Road. He cited the allocation of 5 acres of land by Rukungiri Prisons for this purpose.
However, discontent among truck drivers like Nyesiga Felex and Tumuhigwe Ezra is palpable. They argue that unlike in other towns, trucks and special vehicles in Rukungiri have traditionally operated from the town center.

Special car operators, including Bahati Amon, Ambrose, Byamugisha Elias, and Ainomugisha Jassy, echoed similar sentiments. They foresee a loss of clientele if forced to relocate to Kagogo Cell outside the town. They fear customers may opt for more convenient options like tuktuks rather than paying extra for transport to reach their new parking site.
The drivers further threatened to revert to operating from home and utilizing phone calls to connect with customers, which could potentially impact their tax contributions to the municipality.
