RUKUNGIRI: The High Court in Rukungiri District, presided over by Justice Tom Chemutai on Wednesday sentenced three men to 65 years in prison each for the brutal murder of a Boda-Boda rider and the theft of his motorcycle.

The convicts, identified as Joab Niwagaba, Onesmus Ainembabazi, and Morris Ariho, received their sentences on Wednesday, bringing a chilling trial to a close. This case has highlighted the grave dangers faced by Boda-Boda riders in Uganda.

The tragic chain of events began on November 15, 2021, when Isaac Muhumuza, a newcomer to the Boda-Boda business, was lured to a remote location by his friend and fellow rider, Morris Ariho. Under the pretext of showing him stolen fuel from a local construction company, Ariho led Muhumuza to an isolated area in Rushoroza Cell, Kanungu District. Unbeknownst to Muhumuza, it was a trap, carefully planned by Ariho and his accomplices, Niwagaba and Ainembabazi.

After using Muhumuza’s motorcycle to reach a farm owned by Niwagaba’s grandfather, the three men hatched a sinister plot to murder him and steal his motorcycle, which was valued at UGX 5 million. Ariho, armed with a hoe provided by Niwagaba, struck Muhumuza multiple times on the head, killing him instantly. They then buried his body near a tree on the farm before fleeing with the stolen motorcycle.

Their plan began to unravel when they attempted to sell the motorcycle as spare parts in Kanungu Town Council. Police grew suspicious of their actions, leading Niwagaba to flee and seek refuge with relatives. However, his arrest soon followed, and the apprehension of his accomplices quickly ensued.

During police interrogation, all three confessed to the crime and revealed the location of Muhumuza’s body, which was later exhumed.

The State Attorney, Anthony Kurugyishuri, representing the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in Rukungiri, presented compelling evidence that left no doubt regarding their guilt. In a decisive ruling, Justice Chemutai sentenced each of the men to 65 years in prison for both murder and aggravated robbery, with the sentences running concurrently.

This case has drawn widespread attention to the rising crime rates targeting Boda-Boda riders across Uganda. Justice Chemutai’s ruling sends a powerful message that the justice system will not tolerate such brutal acts of violence. For the family of Muhumuza, the ruling brings a measure of closure, though the pain of his tragic loss will remain.

As these men begin their lengthy sentences, the case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences that can arise from greed and betrayal. It also underscores the need for heightened community vigilance to prevent similar crimes in the future.
