KAMPALA: Kira Municipality Member of Parliament, Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, has announced his intention to challenge the current Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among, for the position in the 2026 elections.
Speaking on Thursday, Ssemujju stated his dissatisfaction with how Speaker Among manages Parliament, accusing her of treating it as a personal business.
“We need professionalism and the rule of law in the House,” Ssemujju emphasized.
In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Ssemujju declared:
“I want to make it categorically clear that I will run against Anita Among in 2026 for the Speakership of Parliament. This Parliament cannot be managed like a personal business where you run it based on your feelings. We need professionalism and the rule of law in the House.” Ssemujju stated.
Rt. Hon. Anita Among, the Woman MP for Bukedea District, was elected Speaker of Parliament in 2022 following the death of Jacob Oulanyah. In that election, Among, representing the ruling NRM party, defeated Bugiri Municipality MP Asuman Basalirwa, the opposition candidate.
Among garnered 401 votes, while Basalirwa received 66 votes.
