KABALE: The Uganda Local Government Workers Union (ULGWU) Secretary General, Hassan Lwabayi Mudiba, has urged teachers to consider contesting for positions on the Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party if they are to always share on national cake.
Mudiba highlighted that this is where decisions about the distribution of national resources are initiated and emphasized that such involvement could address issues affecting the teachers’ union.
Speaking during the 19th Annual Delegates’ Conference for teachers held at Agaba Center in Kabale Municipality on Tuesday, Mudiba noted that challenges such as pay disparities among teachers would not be resolved unless teachers adopt innovative approaches, including seeking influential positions in government.
Mudiba expressed interest in understanding what transpires during meetings between Uganda National Teachers Union (UNATU) leaders and President Museveni to address union-related issues. He pointed out that influential unions in countries like South Africa use such opportunities to negotiate resource allocations to teachers’ union.
While acknowledging the presence of teacher representatives in Parliament, Mudiba stressed the need to secure more top positions to effectively push for and lobby for the welfare of teachers.
