On December 2, 2024, Hon. Okaasai Sidronius Opolot, the Minister of State for Energy, inspected the progress of the works. He revealed that the government plans to export power from the newly constructed Karukara Substation in Rubanda District to Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Minister Okaasai stated that Uganda intends to dominate the East African region as the largest power exporter. He added that the remaining power will be distributed to the planned steel factory in Rubanda, as well as proposed industrial parks in Kabale, Kisoro, and Bushenyi districts.

However, the minister noted that the completion of the substation and the Mirama-Kabale transmission line will not completely solve the problem of constant power outages in Greater Kabale and Kisoro.
