KABALE: A 35-year-old man was hacked to death on Christmas Eve while attempting to steal cocks in Kabale District.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, identified the deceased as Deus Tumwesigye, a resident of Kyembeho village in Kaharo Sub-county.
According to Maate, Tumwesigye was caught breaking into the kitchen of Alex Byaruhanga, a peasant in the same village, at around 4:00 a.m. on Tuesday. He had reportedly stolen two cocks before being apprehended by Byaruhanga, Osbert Nasasira, and other residents.
Maate revealed that Tumwesigye, alleged to be a habitual criminal in the area, was killed by the mob, including his biological brothers, Alex Byaruhanga and Osbert Nasasira. Other suspects involved in the attack remain at large.
“The Police were alerted, and the District CID Officer led a team to the scene. Statements were recorded from witnesses, and the body was examined, retrieved, and subjected to a postmortem,” Maate said.
He further disclosed that Venansio Kanyankole, the Local Council One Chairman of Kyembeho village, and Kesande Fausta, the deceased’s sister, have been arrested to assist with investigations.
