KATAKWI: In response to increasing theft and widespread community outrage, the Katakwi District Security Committee has unveiled a multi-faceted strategy to restore order and safety in Otuyai village, Abwokodia Parish, Usuk Sub County.

The measures include the construction of a new police post, imposing fines on owners of stray animals to deter thefts, and issuing formal warnings to individuals accused of criminal activities.

The decision comes after residents of Otuyai expressed their frustration over persistent thefts in the area. Victims such as Emmanuel Ocatum and Michael Opus described the culprits as misguided adolescents whose actions are sabotaging local development.

He attributed the surge in crime to overpopulation, which has strained the capacity of local authorities.

During a community meeting held on December 27, 2024, residents did not hold back. They identified habitual offenders, including Ivan Ecuman and Olupot, accused of stealing livestock, cooked food, saucepans, and even bicycles.

Sgt. Egesa, the Officer in Charge of Usuk Police Post, reassured the community of intensified patrols to apprehend the perpetrators.

“We are committed to improving security and will leave no stone unturned in bringing these criminals to justice,” he said.

Dr. Opio Michael Peter, the Assistant Resident District Commissioner (ARDC) of Katakwi, popularly known as “Goal Man,” urged the community to collaborate with security officials.

“Security is everyone’s responsibility. Report any suspected wrongdoers be it thieves, murderers, or those possessing poison. Together, we can rid our communities of these threats,” Dr. Opio said.

He added that the District Security Committee plans to hold regular meetings to address security concerns across Katakwi district.

With the promise of a new police post and stricter enforcement measures, residents of Otuyai and surrounding areas are hopeful for a return to peace.

However, the success of these efforts hinges on the unity and vigilance of both authorities and the community.

Katakwi District’s resolve to tackle crime reflects a broader commitment to ensuring safety and fostering development in the region.
