Efforts to contain the fire were delayed due to a malfunction in the fire brigade’s water pump. Locals attempted to salvage some items, but by the time another firefighting vehicle arrived, the damage was already extensive.
Hilltop Hotel manager Peace Kyomuhendo stated that the exact cause of the fire remains unclear, especially since the sauna primarily uses firewood to heat water. She confirmed that while the sauna facility was completely destroyed, other sections of the hotel remained unaffected.
