Uganda’s football scene has received a major boost as Hamz Stadium-Nakivubo gains official approval from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to host major continental tournaments. This milestone reinforces Uganda’s growing stature in African football and highlights the nation’s commitment to world-class sports infrastructure.
Opened to the public on June 1, 2024, Hamz Stadium is now cleared to host qualifiers and final rounds of the Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON), men’s U17, U20, and U23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), as well as preliminary matches in the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup. CAF praised the stadium for its role in elevating football standards across the continent.

The approval follows a series of international endorsements. In October 2024, FIFA officially certified the stadium’s turf, with FIFA President Gianni Infantino personally awarding the certification. Additionally, the stadium was nominated for a prestigious global sports award earlier this year, cementing its reputation as a top-tier venue.
Rogers Mulindwa, Chairman of the Hamz Stadium Management Committee, credited the achievement to the concerted efforts of the Ugandan government and sports authorities. He acknowledged key figures such as President Yoweri Museveni, Minister of Education and Sports Janet Kataaha Museveni, State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang, and FUFA President Moses Magogo for their dedication to advancing Uganda’s football infrastructure.

“This is not just a victory for Hamz Stadium—it is a milestone for Uganda and African football as a whole,” Mulindwa stated. “We are committed to maintaining the highest standards as we host prestigious tournaments, showcasing Uganda’s talent on the continental stage.”
Beyond football, the CAF approval is expected to enhance Uganda’s tourism industry, attract global audiences, and nurture emerging talent. With its cutting-edge facilities and growing international recognition, Hamz Stadium-Nakivubo is poised to become a premier hub for African football and a beacon of Uganda’s sporting ambitions.
