Archbishop Kaziimba encouraged believers to remain steadfast in their faith
KAMPALA: As the Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu marks five years as the 9th Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, his tenure has been characterized by resilience, innovation, and a steadfast commitment to biblical truth.
From navigating the COVID-19 pandemic to clearing the monumental Church House debt and strengthening global Anglican ties, Archbishop Kaziimba’s leadership has reshaped the Church’s spiritual and economic future.
Shortly after his enthronement on March 1, 2020, Uganda was hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to a nationwide lockdown that forced the closure of churches. Faced with an unprecedented challenge, Archbishop Kaziimba turned to digital media, ensuring that the Church of Uganda continued to minister to believers.

Through NTV Uganda, NBS TV, Bukedde TV, UBC TV, BBS TV, Namirembe FM, and the newly established Church of Uganda Family TV, he broadcast Sunday services from his residence, reaching millions across the country. The Anglican Youth Fellowship (AYF) Choir provided worship and sound equipment, while Words of Hope Ministries supported live streaming across social media platforms.
The Online Church of Uganda was born—an innovation that continues to connect believers worldwide.
One of the greatest milestones of Archbishop Kaziimba’s tenure has been the full repayment of the Janani Luwum Church House loan, a debt that once stood at 60 billion shillings.
Through the Love Gift Campaign, believers rallied to raise funds, despite skepticism from many. In a remarkable act of faith and generosity, the Church successfully cleared the entire loan, securing Church House as a self-sustaining asset.

“This achievement is a testament to God’s faithfulness,” the Archbishop said. “It shows that when we trust in Him, nothing is impossible.”
In a bold move, the Church of Uganda, under Archbishop Kaziimba’s leadership, formally cut ties with the Church of England over its stance on same-sex relationships. Uganda reaffirmed its commitment to biblical doctrine, strengthening its alliances with GAFCON and the Global South Fellowship of Anglicans.
In February 2024, Uganda hosted the Global South Fellowship of Anglican Bishops Formation Retreat, reinforcing its position as a leading voice in the global Anglican community.

Beyond spiritual leadership, Archbishop Kaziimba has prioritized community transformation, forging partnerships with organizations like One Child, NAADS, NARO, and Life International. These collaborations have led to:
- Sustainable agriculture programs benefiting clergy and laity.
- Family-strengthening initiatives under the Becoming One Ministry.
- Land protection efforts, with over 1,000 church land titles secured.
The Archbishop also praised Hon. Canon Dr. Ruth Nankabirwa for spearheading the Archbishop Nkoyoyo Guest House project, which is set to generate income for the Church.

Recognizing the urgent need for climate action, Archbishop Kaziimba launched Environment Focus Month on February 28, 2025, mandating that:
- Each confirmant plants a tree as part of their confirmation.
- Every baptized child has a tree planted in their name.
He urged Ugandans to take responsibility for environmental conservation, warning that deforestation and climate change threaten future generations.
On the issue of human rights, the Archbishop emphasized that the Church of Uganda remains actively engaged in justice and advocacy. Through the Inter-Religious Council of Uganda, Church leaders have held dialogues with President Yoweri Museveni and other key stakeholders.
“Our approach is rooted in meaningful engagement, not media sensationalism,” the Archbishop stated. “We seek practical solutions that promote peace and dignity for all Ugandans.”
As he reflects on his leadership, Archbishop Kaziimba remains grateful for the support of clergy, mission partners, and the government, particularly President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, for his collaboration in community transformation.

Quoting Galatians 6:9, he encouraged believers to remain steadfast in their faith.
“Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
With unwavering faith and a vision for a stronger, self-sustaining Church, Archbishop Kaziimba’s legacy continues to unfold, one of courage, faith, and transformation.
