KABAROLE: The Catholic Church has reopened and rededicated Our Lady of Snows Virika Cathedral in Fort Portal, Kabarole District, following a Shs3.6 billion reconstruction.
Since its construction in 1967, Virika Cathedral has undergone three major repairs in 1987, 2004, and most recently in 2024, primarily due to persistent roof leaks. According to Msgr. Isaiah Mayombo, chairperson of the project steering committee, the latest renovations involved a complete overhaul and modification of the roof structure, replacement of the floor and doors, and other enhancements.
At the re-opening and blessing of the cathedral, President Yoweri Museveni, represented by Vice President Maj. (Rtd) Jessica Alupo, praised the Catholic Church’s leadership for guiding the faithful and working alongside the government to promote development. He emphasized that the rededication honored Bishop Vincent Joseph McCauley’s legacy in building a resilient cathedral.
“This occasion is a sign of thanksgiving, respect, and dedication to Almighty God. It is a spiritual gesture and a testimony of faith put into action,” Museveni said.
He commended the financial contributions from believers, stakeholders, and well-wishers in Fort Portal, calling the newly reconstructed cathedral a visible sign of gratitude for God’s grace upon Uganda.
Museveni also acknowledged the efforts of Bishop Robert Muhiirwa and Msgr. Mayombo, along with all clergy members who have nurtured the diocese since 1967.
The president highlighted the Church’s role in shaping responsible citizens and reaching communities beyond the pulpit through outreach programs that improve livelihoods. He applauded church-founded initiatives in health, education, and financial services, which have complemented government programs.
Museveni urged Ugandans to work hard to eradicate poverty and achieve self-sustainability. He encouraged participation in government programs such as Operation Wealth Creation, the Parish Development Model, Emyooga, and youth skilling centers to enhance economic growth.
“As we dedicate this house of God today, let us also rededicate ourselves to hard work and honesty,” he urged. He called on leaders to set a good example and resist negative influences that could compromise their integrity.
Addressing the youth, who make up the largest segment of Uganda’s population, Museveni warned against the allure of quick money and extravagant lifestyles, which he described as paths to destruction. Quoting Hosea 4:6, he said, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” He encouraged Ugandans to apply the knowledge and principles of the NRM to achieve prosperity for all.
He congratulated the faithful of Our Lady of Snows Virika Cathedral on the rededication, praying for wisdom and understanding to lead prosperous lives.
Rt. Rev. Robert Muhiirwa, Bishop of Fort Portal Diocese, called on Catholics to renew their spiritual lives.
“The inauguration of this newly renovated church should inspire a renewal in Christian conduct, especially in our families, workplaces, and communities,” Bishop Muhiirwa said.
He also expressed gratitude to President Museveni for his contributions to the cathedral’s reconstruction and other diocesan projects.
The Most Rev. Luigi Bianco, Apostolic Nuncio to Uganda, presided over the ceremony, which was attended by clergy, politicians, and Christians
