Summary:
NUP supporters and indeed all political actors must respect lawful orders from security personnel and avoid confrontational situations that breed violence.
OP-ED: As the Kawempe by-election approaches, the scenes of violence witnessed recently must not be repeated. Electoral processes should be peaceful, allowing voters to express their will without fear or intimidation.
The recent incidents where individuals, reportedly dressed in National Unity Platform (NUP) attire, were seen throwing stones at law enforcement officers were both reckless and unacceptable.
Such actions not only endanger the lives of officers but also put the entire community at risk.
Law enforcement officers, despite facing provocation, exercised commendable restraint, preventing what could have been a tragic escalation. Kudos to those who managed the security deployment professionally.
NUP supporters and indeed all political actors must respect lawful orders from security personnel and avoid confrontational situations that breed violence. Elections should be about engaging voters and presenting ideas, not inciting chaos.
One must question the reasoning behind attacking officers armed with firearms. Do those involved understand the risks if an officer were to be seriously injured? Security personnel are human beings too, with families and responsibilities.
Violence against them not only undermines the rule of law but also endangers the broader community.
Additionally, ferrying non-residents from places like Masaka, Jinja, or Mukono to create an illusion of popularity in Kawempe is both unnecessary and counterproductive.
Local residents should be left to campaign and vote without external interference that disrupts community peace.
The culture of provoking security forces, seeking media attention, and attempting to sway international opinion through orchestrated chaos must come to an end. These acts not only harm businesses but also paint Uganda in a negative light.
If we truly seek a peaceful and democratic 2025/2026 general election, all political groups must reject violence and embrace dialogue.
As Ugandans, we must stand united in condemning electoral violence. Collaboration with security agencies and adherence to lawful orders will ensure a stable and prosperous Uganda before, during, and after the elections.
A violent environment discourages investment, weakens the economy, and worsens unemployment.
Let us work toward a Uganda where democracy thrives, and every individual has a fair opportunity to succeed. Every human life matters.
