KANUNGU: Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, Minister of Information, Communication Technology, and National Guidance, has been installed as the second Chancellor of Great Lakes Regional University in Kanungu District.
His installation took place on Saturday during the university’s 10th graduation ceremony, where 101 graduates received diplomas and degrees across various academic disciplines. The event was held at the university’s premises in Bushura, Kirima Sub-county.

Dr. Baryomunsi succeeds Dr. Hamlet Mbabazi Kabushenga, the university’s first Chancellor. In his address, he pledged to elevate the institution into a key player in regional development by fostering strong local and international partnerships.
He also urged parents to prioritize their children’s education despite financial constraints.

Dr. Africano Kangire, the Vice Chancellor, highlighted pressing challenges, including inadequate transportation, medical facilities, and computer labs, which hinder the university’s operations.
As the Chief Guest, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa cautioned Kanungu residents, particularly the youth, against sectarianism based on religion, warning that it impedes development and has no place in Parliament.

He also commended the spirit of unity, recalling how the university founded by an Anglican was later rescued by a Catholic during a time of crisis.
He urged local leaders and residents to focus on progress over division.
