RUKUNGIRI: The Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese, the Rt. Rev. Onesimus Asiimwe, has warned religious leaders in Rukungiri District against engaging in partisan politics and misleading their congregations as the country heads toward the 2026 general elections.
Bishop Asiimwe made the remarks on Sunday during the induction and installation of Venerable Amos Katushabe as the first Archdeacon of Kyabugashe Archdeaconry, held at St. Peter’s Church of Uganda in Nyakagyeme Sub-county.
Bishop Asiimwe noted with concern that some religious leaders had already begun taking political sides, which he said could mislead the flock and compromise the church’s neutrality. He firmly banned any involvement of clergy in partisan political activities, warning that such behavior must cease immediately.
“Religious leaders must remain neutral, vigilant, and focus on protecting the integrity of the church. They should be agents of peace and unity during and after the political season,” said Bishop Asiimwe.
He also advised Christians against wearing political party regalia or conducting political campaigns within church premises.

He emphasized that such programs aim to improve the livelihoods of both church communities and the nation at large.
