School authorities at Kayanga Primary School in Kisiizi Parish, Nyarushanje Sub-county, Rukungiri District, are facing significant challenges due to the poor state of the school’s toilets, a problem common to many schools across Uganda.
The deteriorating sanitation facilities are impacting Pupil health, hygiene, and the overall learning environment, with potential negative effects on academic performance.
The school’s headteacher, Robert Twinomujuni, warned that the dilapidated latrines pose a serious health risk, increasing the likelihood of disease transmission among pupils and staff.
Twinomujuni also expressed concern that poor toilet facilities create an unfavorable school environment, potentially lowering pupils’ morale and affecting their concentration in class.
He further revealed that the school lacks staff quarters, making it difficult to accommodate teachers on-site.
The Chairperson of the Parents and Teachers Association (PTA), Naras Rugarwaana, revealed that boys and girls currently share a single toilet, a situation he described as unsuitable and unsafe.
He appealed to the government to urgently intervene and address the sanitation crisis at the school.
