The NRM Secretary General, Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong, has praised the leadership of the Uganda Prisons Service for its significant contribution to the country’s economic welfare and prosperity through agriculture and manufacturing.

Speaking on Friday at Luzira Prison Training School, where he delivered a keynote address to senior officers undergoing an intermediate course, Todwong lauded the institution’s organization and commercial initiatives.

“The Prison Service is well organized, and I commend you especially for your commercial activities. You are playing a vital role in ensuring national food security through farming and boosting the economy through manufacturing, including furniture production,” he said.

Todwong emphasized that peace is a cornerstone of socio-economic development, adding that the Prisons Service has been instrumental in producing food, cereals, and even seeds distributed to communities through prison farms.

Addressing concerns over security officers’ eligibility for the Parish Development Model (PDM), Todwong pledged to engage President Museveni on the matter.

“Our security personnel including those in the UPDF, police, and prisons earn modest salaries that may not sufficiently support their families. I believe extending PDM support to their families, possibly through barracks arrangements, would greatly enhance their welfare,” he noted.

He also urged officers to maintain discipline and serve as role models in promoting law and order in society.

“The nation is proud of you. Serve in a way that meets the expectations of Ugandans. Learn to manage your emotions, even under provocation,” Todwong advised.

He concluded by commending President Museveni and the NRM government for professionalizing security institutions, noting that unlike in past regimes where recruitment was often based on tribal affiliations, today’s selections are based on merit.
