About 2,339 households in Kisoro District lack access to toilet facilities, according to the 2024 National Population and Housing Census results released by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS).
The area-specific findings were shared over the weekend during a dissemination event held at the Joseph Ndatira Community Resource Centre in Gisha Cell, Central Ward, Chahafi Town Council. The ceremony was attended by UBOS officials, security personnel, and local leaders.
The report shows Kisoro District has a population of 433,662 people across 80,206 households. Among these, 1,889 households in Bufumbira North, South, and East practice open defecation, while 34 households in Kisoro Municipality and 416 in Bukimbiri County still lack toilet facilities.
Presenting the findings, UBOS Deputy Executive Director Dr. Vincent Sennono expressed concern over the health risks of open defecation, warning of potential outbreaks of cholera and dysentery if urgent sanitation interventions are not implemented.
